What your photographer thinks about before your newborn session

Whenever I go into a home for a newborn photography session in Boston, I always ask questions. This is the best way for me to get to know families in the short amount of time I am with them. I’m always inspired by the people, their home and the light but I also want to capture the details of what life is like in these first few weeks. Even if your favorite spot to hang out isn’t in the best light, I do my best to try to document it in some way. When my son was a week old we all had trouble calming him down.  My mom figured out this strange way of resting his body on her arm and his head in her hand.  Moving forward, we referred to it as the “grandma” hold. There is not one photograph of this memory I have in my mind and I want to document those for other families.

Somewhat related, if you scroll down, you’ll see the dad laying on the couch with the baby.  This “pose” in my mind will forever be known as the “TV pose.” In a lot of my sessions, dads say they hang out like this with the newborn.  In chatting with one dad I was laughing when I told him how it came up a lot.  He told me the remote is usually in the other hand and he hangs out like this while watching tv.  It is so obvious to me now but we haven’t had a TV in our living room for years so I completely overlooked the connection.
