When I was pregnant with my kids, I didn’t take many photos of myself, and now I wish I had a few more. Everyone feels completely different when pregnant, but it is incredible that we can grow another human. Maternity photography is a beautiful way to celebrate the journey of pregnancy and the anticipation of welcoming a new life into the world. These photos capture the joy, love, and excitement of expecting a baby, creating cherished memories that last a lifetime.

1. Timing is Key
Best Time for Maternity Photos ~ I always say there isn’t a perfect set time for photos. For most families, the ideal time for maternity photos is between 28 to 34 weeks of pregnancy. During this period, the baby bump is prominent and beautifully round, but you’re not yet in the final weeks of pregnancy when you might feel more uncomfortable. More importantly, I tell people that you want to take it when you look pregnant and before the swelling and uncomfortableness start. That said, I photographed a mom at 38 weeks. So, yeah, it depends.

2. Choosing the Right Photographer
Finding a Specialist ~ Find a Boston maternity photographer whose style you like and connect with. They will have the experience and expertise to make you feel comfortable and capture your best angles. Browse through portfolios to find a style that resonates with you.

3. Location, Location, Location
Picking the Perfect Spot ~ Consider Boston locations that are meaningful to you, whether it’s a beautiful outdoor setting, a cozy home environment, or a professional studio. Outdoor locations, such as parks, beaches, or gardens, offer natural light and scenic backdrops, while indoor sessions can provide a more intimate and controlled atmosphere.

4. What to Wear
Dressing for the Occasion ~ Choose outfits that highlight your baby bump and make you feel good. Flowing dresses, fitted tops, and maxi dresses are popular choices. Solid colors or subtle patterns work best to keep the focus on you and your bump. Avoid busy prints and overly trendy outfits that might date the photos.

5. Posing with Ease
Comfortable and Natural Poses. ~ Classic poses include standing profiles, seated poses, and poses that include your partner or other children. But, honestly, keep moving—whether it’s just your hands or your feet walking, you’ll feel more natural than just propping your hands on your belly.

6. What to do With Your Hands
Figuring out what to do with your hands can be stressful. Do you rest them on the belly? Keep them by your side? Which hand goes on top? Think about how you stand naturally. Does one hand automatically rest on the belly? For a lot of the photographs, I recommend placing one hand on the belly to show you are pregnant, especially if your outfit doesn’t highlight it. However, you don’t need to for all your photos, and sometimes can look overdone. Interacting with your partner or kids and placing your hands on your kid’s shoulder or around them in a hug might feel more natural.

7. Involving Loved Ones
Family and Sibling Photos ~ Including your partner, older children, or pets can make your maternity session even more special. These photos capture the excitement and love of the whole family as they await the new arrival, and often if you have other children, the maternity session is more of a family session. You get to document this particular time before the family grows.
