During 2013, I’m participating in a blog circle called “Letters to Our Sons” with a wonderful group of photographers.  Each month we post a letter to our son/s. Click here to read last month’s post.

Dear Ezra,

“I want some ice cream.”  This is what you said one morning.  I was so shocked that you strung together five words that I almost let you have ice cream for breakfast.  You are starting to talk in complete sentences instead of two word soundbites and it is amazing.  There are some words and phrases that you blurt out and I have no idea where you learned them.  Also, you appear to love your little sister.  Frequently you will go over and give her a kiss, or try to share something like your milk or a sticker.  It melts my heart.  You are a toddler though so I’m sorry that I hover.  Every once in awhile instead of a kiss you attempt to hit or kick Sadie.  It isn’t intentional, though.  One of your favorite things right now is that you love to be tickled.  It is a game for you so instead of staying just “tickle me” you will say “tickle knee,” “tickle toes,” or some of my favorites “tickle hair” and “tickle eye.”  You don’t want Sadie to be left out so you also say “Tickle Sadie toes,” etc.  OH.MY.GOSH.  You are so cute!

Once day after you played in some puddles wearing your only pair of shoes, I bought you these awesome yellow boots.  You LOVE them!  I think you wore them every day for a week and it wasn’t even raining.  The photos below are from one of our outings.

At the last minute on Monday, April 15th your dad decided to stay home for his birthday. We raced around the house to gather our belongings and left to watch the Boston Marathon. Not knowing what was about to happen hours later, we enjoyed the beautiful weather and cheered on the athletes.  You seemed to enjoy the marathon and kept asking for “more” runners.  You won’t remember the explosions that took place later in the afternoon but having the attack and the subsequent manhunt so close to where we live was unsettling.  I think there is something about having a child that make these types of events worse. On Friday, while the police was looking for the second terrorist you pointed at helicopters and shouted “rhe-rhe” every time you heard a siren.  Thankfully, I don’t think you understood what was going on but we won’t be able to protect for too much longer. My heart goes out to everyone who was injured and to the families of those who died. We are also very thankful for all the police officers who risked their lives in the search and to protect us.
