In newborn photography, props can add or take away from your Boston newborn home session photos. There are creative ways to add something special to you that doesn’t deviate from why you hired me to photograph this milestone. Heirlooms, handmade quilts, special gifts, and unique outfits are all “props” that can personalize your sessions and make them feel more like your family than a stock image on the Internet.

Family Heirlooms and Treasured Items

One of the most meaningful ways to personalize newborn photography is by incorporating family heirlooms or treasured items. These could include a cherished bassinet, an antique toy, a piece of jewelry, or a cultural object passed down through generations. These items will add depth and historical context to the images, adding to your story and heritage.

Handmade Quilts and Personalized Touches

Handmade quilts or blankets explicitly crafted for the newborn can add a layer of warmth and intimacy to the photographs. It is common for family or friends to make these as presents or gifts. Once, I had a session where the entire family were quilters, and there was an overabundance of quilts for the baby. Another time, a neighbor finished a blanket after the grandmother passed. These items provide a cozy backdrop and symbolize the love and care surrounding the baby.

Thoughtful Gifts and Sentimental Tokens

I am amazed that some parents still have their childhood loveys or stuffed animals. Sometimes it is a photograph or painting you will like in the background. Finding a creative way to incorporate them adds a personal touch to the images. Or, maybe it was a special gift, and you would like to use the toy to document your baby’s growth. These are all part of your family’s story.

Unique Outfits and Clothing

While the focus of your Boston newborn photography session is to capture these unforgettable moments in your family, sometimes there is a special onesie from a coffee shop or your favorite vacation spot that you want to photograph. Typically, we include it at the end of the session, and it can be silly but meaningful to you. Choosing a particular outfit or clothing for the newborn can be a fun way to add personality to the photographs.

In newborn lifestyle photography, props can have a negative connotation. My style of photography is more natural; these are ways to incorporate props that do not take away from documenting genuine connections, emotions, and interactions between the baby and their loved ones. Whether you choose to incorporate props or not, the most important thing is to focus on capturing the authentic moments and creating images to be cherished for years.
