Welcoming a new addition to the family is a joyous occasion filled with love, excitement, and endless opportunities to capture precious moments through photography. When it comes to sibling and newborn photos, there are countless creative ideas to explore. If you are looking for a Boston newborn photographer, here are some of the strategies I tend to use in my sessions with new babies

Bird’s Eye View – Kids Lying Down

This is one of my favorite photographs to get everyone looking, particularly for those wiggly kids and when there are a range of ages. Get creative with perspective by having the older siblings lie down on their backs, with the newborn nestled between them. Position yourself above them to capture a unique bird’s eye view of the scene. This angle lets you showcase the adorable interactions between the siblings and their newest family member. It’s a playful yet intimate way to capture the magic of siblinghood.

Sibling Interaction

Encourage natural interaction between the siblings and the newborn to capture authentic moments of love, curiosity, and tenderness. Whether it’s a gentle touch, a sweet kiss on the forehead, or a loving embrace, these spontaneous gestures speak volumes about the bond between siblings. Some kids might want to sing the baby a song, while the younger set might count the baby’s toes. Candid shots of sibling interaction convey genuine emotion and create heartfelt memories that will be cherished for years to come.

Crib Shot

The crib serves as a symbolic focal point in the nursery, representing the arrival of the newest family member. Use the crib as a backdrop for a charming photo featuring the siblings and the newborn. Whether it’s the older siblings peering into the crib with adoration or cuddling up together next to the crib, this shot captures the excitement and anticipation of welcoming a new baby into the family.

Sibling holding the baby

This is the traditional shot. Knowing whether the older child can AND wants to hold the baby is important. I always recommend a parent stay close, and for the younger set, even helping the older kiddo hold the baby makes your older kiddo feel special.

Kids in Parents’ Arms (Cropped In)

There’s something inherently heartwarming about capturing the bond between siblings and their newborn sibling while being cradled in their parents’ arms. While a warm family embrace shows connection, it is also helpful for wiggly toddlers or kids who won’t go near or touch their new sibling. The intimacy of the moment creates a timeless image that celebrates the sibling bond.

Parent with All the Kids

Sometimes all you need is your babies in your arms and that is the best way to capture the littles together.  The older sibling can sing a song, hold the babies fingers or read a book to his or her new sibling.

Whether you are at a session with the Boston newborn photographer or taking the photos yourself, these ideas can help you capture this new sibling bond.
