A bar/bat mitzvah is a significant milestone in a young Jewish person’s life, marking their transition into adulthood. This joyous occasion is often celebrated with family, friends, and community, making it a perfect opportunity for capturing lasting memories through photography. While you don’t need professional photography during the day, it is nice to record some family photos. As a mom to a thirteen-year-old who was called in the Torah in Boston in June, I can’t remember the last time we were all dressed up.
I could generate a list of must-have shots, but I think that would take away from how special the day is. That said, here are some important moments.
Torah Reading
This is the heart of the ceremony and what the bulk of the preparations has revolved around—whether reading the section, learning to chat, or writing a d’var Torah, these photos have a lot of meaning. Important photographs capture the new thirteen-year-old holding and/or reading from the Torah.
Emotion
It is an amazing experience watching your child prepare and put in so much for this day that any emotion we can document is a blessing. There are a lot of nerves, but as a parent, there is a lot to be proud of.
Family Photos
It is important to photograph all the different combinations of photographs, but I believe they can be informal. Having a little fun will loosen everyone up. Photographing the family with the Torah and on the bimah is essential, but finding other areas to document the family and the child is important, too. Sometimes, you can use other places in the sanctuary or in the synagogue, and don’t forget about outside if the weather is forgiving.
Individual of the Bar/Bat Mitzvah Child
Let’s remember individual photos. This is their day to shine.
