Although I was heading to this newborn’s house in Somerville, MA for a photography session, his older brother stole the show! While mom was feeding the baby, I spent some time photographing his 2.5 year old brother. Boy this toddler had some energy! He reminded me of my son and I can’t even imagine what would happen if the two of them had a play date. At the beginning of the session, I like to spend some time with the older sibling. I’m sure it has to be such a difficult transition for them especially with visitors coming to see the new baby. If I can win the sibling over early on, it makes the rest of photography session go a little easier on everyone.

The family is fans of soccer so the dad and brother were wearing matching jersey – well, at least when the 2 year old would leave his shirt on! This is a difficult age to capture indoors and especially when there is a new baby in the house taking away mom and dad’s attention. We spent some time capturing the family together and then dad took the older brother to the museum so mom and I could focus our attention on the newborn. If you have an older child, this is my typical workflow. Although it seems like second, third, etc babies can sleep through anything it is helpful if one of the parents takes the child outside for a special play date or to another room.

The entire session took place in the living room. The living room had some beautiful light and also this gorgeous 100 year old mirror, which I did my best to incorporate. The baby’s mom laughed afterwards because she forgot she still had her Christmas cards up. However, what I love about lifestyle sessions is that it is documenting that moment. I can totally relate to being too busy with my 2 year old to even think about taking the cards down. Usually at sessions I forget to use my macro lens back I did take some time to photograph this newborn’s details. I love how they turned out and I’m going to try to take macro shots more often.
