Before this session I was unfamiliar with the term Baek-il. It is a 100th day celebration in Korean culture and from what the parents told me there is a tradition of photographing the baby on this day. This particular family wasn’t concerned about it being the exact day so this little guy was a few days shy of his 100th day. I don’t photograph a lot of 3 month olds since most people elect to have newborn photos taken and then again when the baby is 6 months but I really enjoyed it. They wanted a few formal photos before moving onto lifestyle portraits. I brought my seamless paper with me to capture a more traditional family photograph before moving on to the lifestyle family photographs, my favorite. It is pretty easy for me to create a portable studio, and every once in awhile I get a request.
They live very close to the Medford, MA center and occupy a gorgeous, sun-filled apartment, basically a photographer’s dream. At first, this little baby was bit cranky so we did our best to keep his spirits up. For a short while the parents bounced him on an exercise ball. However, once mom and dad took off his clothes his energy did a 180! Mom had an adorable pair of knitted pants we used for a second outfit that coordinated perfectly with one of the rugs I brought with me. In between the family photos, we were able to capture some photographs of the baby playing with his favorite toys. For awhile, we had some trouble getting this 3 month old to smile, which according to mom and dad stern looking is his usually demeanor. We managed to document some adorable little smiles.
I really enjoyed this session and I hope I receive a few more Baek-il requests.
